Assistive Technology (AT) is an umbrella term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities. AT also includes the process used in selecting, locating, and using the devices. AT promotes greater independence by enabling people to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish or had great difficulty accomplishing. By providing equipment or changing methods of interacting with technology, people can have what they need to successfully accomplish various tasks.
“Assistive technology” may specifically refer to new devices designed to assist with tasks. “Adaptive technology” may specifically mean making modifications to existing devices and technology to enable their use by people with disabilities.
